Robot Chicken

What is Robot Chicken?  It's a stop motion animation show by Seth Green on Adult Swim.  You see there was a dead chicken in the road an a mad scientist found him and brought him back to life with some robotic implants.  But that has nothing to do with the show.  You see the Robot Chicken is then forced to watch random television and all the beloved icons from our childhood are destoyed.  The Flintstones, The Thundercats, Knight Rider, no one is safe.  It's very funny.

Celebrity Cooking Showdown

First off, sorry no Apprentice tonight.  But the good news is: it is replaced by Celebrity Cooking Showdown!  Don't worry, it's only just this week.  Now I didn't watch Dancing with the Stars (except once in Sydney while doing my laundry, but that didn't count since it was the Australian version) or Skating with Celebrities, but I will be tuning in tonight.  Why?  Because one of my favorite actresses is on, Alison Sweeney.  Who?  Ya know, Sami from Days of Our Lives.  What?  Yes I do TiVo Days everyday and I usually crunch an entire week together and watch only the first 5 and last 10 minutes of each episode.  Really, that's all you need.  But the best reason to watch the aging Soap is Alison Sweeney.  She's been on the show since she was 16 and in that time she's kidnapped her baby sister, been dumped at the alter SIX times, thrown through a patio door, been convicted of murder and sentenced to death (and survived), and travelled to a Middle Eastern war zone in disguise.  As much as I want her to live happily ever after, it's so much fun to watch her melt down when things go badly for her.

As much of a bad girl her alter-ego is, Alison is a sweetheart.  My parents have met her a couple times at charity events in Las Angeles.  I can't wait to see if she tries to play up her bad girl image or if she stays her sweet self.

Healing Island

Another good episode of LOST last night.  Unfortunately we have to wait three weeks for the next one.  Next week Alias returns to finish off the season.  We had only a few new questions and lots of answers.
What we learned:
  • The island heals people, or at least Locke and Rose
  • Rose had terminal cancer before arriving on the island
  • Rose knows that Locke used to be in a wheel chair
  • Locke will be back on his feet sooner than he should be
  • Charlie and Mr. Eko are building a church
  • Hurley is back to normal and on a diet
  • Jack and Kate have an additional magazine of bullets
  • Kate didn't tell Jack that "The Others" were sophisticated because he didn't tell her they were holding Henry
  • Henry Gale is definitely there on purpose
  • Michael is back
New or still unanswered:
  • Why is Henry Gale there?
  • Did he push the button?
  • Did the others release Michael, did he escape, or did he even get captured?
  • Why is Jack such a good marksmen?
  • Why didn't the island heal Boone, Shannon, Marshall Mars, the pilot, etc.?

Don't you wish your reality show was hot like me

The Pussy Cat Dolls are trying to be the newest Celebreality show.  The strangely super-popular sextet are currently in talks with the new CW network for a new show about them.  I really don't have any comment about it, I just wanted an excuse to use that title.

FindTune.Com

Yesterday I was watching The O.C. and I really liked the song they had during the opening segment.  The FOX website was no help at all but I found this great site on Google called FindTune.COM.  You can search through loads of TV Shows (and movies) for all the songs heard on each episode.  You can add songs you think were on there or flag songs other people added incorrectly.  Click on the song you and it brings you right to iTunes.  It's a really great tool.

The song I liked was Good Day by Tally Hall, but after buying it and listening too it a couple times, I'm not that thrilled by it any more.

I was wrong about the Ghost Whisperer...Boobs!

Last May when The Ghost Whisperer was announced I said:
The Ghost Whisperer - Jennifer Love Hewitt stars as a psychic investigator in a show similar to Medium on NBC.  No wait, it's exactly like Medium.  This could actually be canceled before Close to Home.
Well I completely underestimated the power of JLH's boobs (Milk Bags!) because the show was picked up for a second season.  After my genuine ghost experience last Saturday with Oscar Hawes at the GAR cemetary maybe I should actually watch the show.

Creationists Beware! TV Networks Evolve!

Dictionary.Com defines evolution as: "Change in the genetic composition of a population during successive generations, as a result of natural selection acting on the genetic variation among individuals, and resulting in the development of new species."

If we treat seasons as generations and market influence as natural selection we can chart how network, specifically cable networks can evolve into something completely different during our lifetimes.  The most noticable one is VH1.  When it started in January 1985, it was MTV for the 18 to 35 year old demographic.  In 21 years it has gone from a video hit channel to the difinitive network for celebrity and pop culture.  By the way I love this format and watch it more than ever.  Everyone complains that VH1 and MTV never play videos anymore.  But no one watched them anyway.  They evolved into something completely different and better rather than becoming extinct due to lowering video ratings.  The network is now filled with the greatest "background" television on the air today.  "Background" television is programming that you can have on while coming and going and doing other things and then coming back without really missing anything.  The "I Love the ..." and "100 Greatest/Awsomely Bad..." weekend marathons are just wonderful things to have one while cleaning the house, doing three weeks of ironing, or sorting Legos.  Best Week Ever debuts each Friday and gets rerun all weekend is the best way to keep up on the pop culture you want to know about but aren't willing to watch "The View" or Oprah everyday to find yourself.  The celebreality program has a great revolving set of shows with celebs Kathy Griffin outshines.  I love VH1 and so should you.

Other notable evolutions: The Discovery Channel changed from general interest documentaries to high testosterone reality shows: Myth Busters, Monster Garage, The Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs.  TLC changed to "Life Unscripted" after the huge success of Trading Spaces and is now exclusively low-rent reality shows.  TNT went from a big sports and movie channel to a big tv show rerun channel.  I'm sure there are others.

Dr. Who

According to IMDB, The original Dr. Who ran for 26 seasons with 8 different doctors and 694 episodes.  And yet, I've seen only one episode.  I didn't get a clear PBS station when I was younger.  Luckily the show has been reborn in the UK and we get the episodes here on SciFi channel.  We've been given four episodes so far and they've been mostly quite good.  I'm looking forward to tonight's conclusion about the aliens who have taken over The British government and killed the Prime Minister.  It's up to the Doctor, Rose, and a junior MP (member of parliament?) to save the Earth.

Guerrilla TiVo Season Pass

Last night I was over at my buddy Larry's house for the weekly rotating Will & Grace TV fest he hosts each Thursday.  I took control of the TiVo since he was busy with hostess duties.  The first thing I did was reprogram the 30 second skip back on his machine: SELECT-PLAY-SELECT-3-0-SELECT.  The I went in and added some shows that everyone should have on their season pass: So NoTORIous on VH1 and The Showbiz Show with David Spade on Comedy Central.  If you have a TiVo and you visit someone who has a TiVo, I highly recomend you just go ahead and add some shows to their Season Pass.  They'll thank you for it.

LOST keeps on delivering

Another great LOST episode last night.  The rather obvious surprise about Dave was completely overwhelmed by the real surprise: Libby was in Santa Rosa with Hurly.  This raises many more questions.
  • Was Libby stalking Hurly in Australia or was this another coincidence?  My vote: Stalker
  • Why was Libby in Santa Rosa and when did she get released?
  • Why didn't anyone hear the plane that dropped the care package?
  • What is Eko building with Charlie?  Did he tell Charlie?
  • Did Fake Henry really let the counter run out or is he just messing with Locke?
  • Does he know what the hatch is really for?
We did learn a lot last night:
  • Hurly was in Santa Rosa because he thought his weight killed two people.
  • Kate did not tell Jack she knows the beard guy has a fake beard.
  • Fake Henry would rather die than face the wrath of the other, especially the leader.
  • The others are more than just a group of scientists, they are a cult.  Fake Henry said God doesn't even know where they are.
Next week we get into Bernard and Rose's backstory for the first time.  After that we have at least one week off, probably two or three.

Ghost Hunters

As long time readers know, it is my opinion that ghosts don't exist.  But if you like shows about ghosts, there are two on tonight.  First is the SciFi channel Ghost Hunters.  A pair of plumbers ghost out at night to search for ghosts.  It's scary.  And as a special bonus, the Discovery Channel show Everything You Need to Know is covering ghosts tonight.  That's a big scary night.

I went out ghost hunting with my friends Ted and David last Saturday.  We went on the seattle ghost hunters tour.  When stopped at the GAR cemetary which is open to the public, not gated like most cemetaries.  Our guide gave us various equipment.  David had the recorder, I had the EM detector, and Ted had the digital camera.  Ted was taking various photos and I was trying to get an EM reading of the camera or flash with no luck.  Then he took a photo of a grave stone, Private Oscar Hawes, and moments later, my EM detector spiked momentarily.  Was it a ghost or just a very well time coincidence?  Not everything is explainable.

My new favorite show: So NoTORIous

I have a new favorite show, So NoTORIous.  Everyone who reads this should add it to your TiVo right now.  RIGHT NOW!  Here's the TiVo link for remote scheduling.  It's on VH1 as part of their celebreality, but it's not a reality show, it's a sitcom starring Tori Spelling as herself.  It's very "inside".  All other shows about the inner workings of Hollywood have died a quick death because most of America didn't get it.  I think this one will work because: (A) everyone knows Tori Spelling or at least the shows her father created (B) it's on VH1 so there's no huge expectation from a big broadcast network.  I love it because the writing is hysterical.  Here's a sample.  Tori goes to a self-help "church" not unlike the Scientologists and sits in a support group where the facilitator tells how they can achieve relavance.  "Why are you not relevant?" he asks around the room.
Bald gay man: "I'm a crystal meth addict." gasps.
Pregant blond girl:  "I'm a sex addict." more gasps.
Tori: "I'm (pause) I'm Tori Spelling." big gasps.

Plus her two best friends and great.  There are great childhood flashbacks.  Loni Anderson plays her mother and she's great.  Also, it's single camera with no laugh track.  Don't miss this.  New episodes are Sunday night but it's on all week long including tonight at 10.

End of the World on the Discovery Channel

Yesterday I decided to stay in and watch random TV in my underpants all day long.  I spent most of the day on the Discovery Channel where they had show after show about how we are all going to die in a natural disaster.  The mega-volcano of Yellowstone Park will some day obliterate life on North America and starve the rest of the world to death.  Hurricanes are getting stronger and one will destroy New York one day.  Luckily Hyper-canes can only exist on water planets of gas giants.  A show about the 2004 tsunami was followed by a show on Mega-tsunamis.  These killers are not caused by undersea earthquakes but by massive landslides.  A volcano in the Canary Islands on Africa may one day slide enough earth into the Atlantic that the resulting wave will destroy everything with 20 miles of the east coast of North America as well as the coastlines of Europe, Africa, and South America.  I need to go to Costco and stock up on bottled water today.

Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King is a kissing book

For those who don't notice patterns like I do, The SciFi Channel runs two new mini-series each year.  One is in March and the other is in December.  Also in April and re-run all the old mini-series as part of mini-series month so you can see any you may have missed such as EarthSea, Dune, or Taken.  Be sure to skip The Triangle.  So earlier this week was the debut of Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King.  I've only watch half of the series so far but I feel like Fred Savage in The Princess Bride.  There is very little about dragons and magic.  The main story is about whether King Seigfried while marry the Queen of Iceland or King Gunter's sister (played by Zoe from Cybil).  It's a kissing book.  And the lead guy is not very hot.
